The Importance of Setting Career Goals

If you know where you’re going, you’re much more likely to get there. This is just as true when you get into your car as when you’re thinking about the future of your career. It’s important to set goals for yourself to help you achieve your dreams. We all know time goes by very quickly, and by making the most of it, you can be more efficient at achieving what you want in your career.

How to set career goals

Think about what you’d like to achieve this month, this year and in the next five years. It might be as simple as learning a new skill and as big as receiving a promotion. Don’t worry about being too specific—just get an idea of the direction you’d like to head.

Break your goal down into steps

If your goal feels intimidating, don’t worry. You can make it much easier for yourself by breaking it down into steps. It doesn’t matter how small a step is, as long as it’s in the right direction (forward!). Make sure your steps are specific, so you know exactly what to do, and measurable, so you know exactly when you’re done. Add a deadline for each step and for the goal overall to keep yourself on track.

Revisit and adjust, as needed

The key to staying on track with your goals is to keep recalibrating. It’s unlikely that every step you outline for yourself will be exactly what you need to do—that’s just the way life works. But remember, it’s a learning process. If one step doesn’t work out and you find you’re not on the right path, simply re-assess what you need to do next, adjust your steps and keep moving. Do this on a regular basis to be sure you’re still moving in the right direction.

Looking for a new job?

This is the goal of many! And if you feel you need help with this goal, one step can be to reach out to a recruiter or visit the website of a staffing agency. You might find open job opportunities you can apply to. Or you may be able to connect with a recruiter to explain what you’re looking for and how you’re qualified.
